ABC Canberra: Jaimee Howell
On Breakfast with Adrienne Francis
Dave and Ellie Croft moved into their current home at Monash in Tuggeranong in 1996.
Since then they have transformed their suburban block into a fertile produce garden.
Ellie encouraged Dave to develop an interest in backyard honey production and Dave has since become an accomplished amateur beekeeper and volunteer swarm relocator.
Bees generally swarm between August and December and Dave has captured and relocated more than 50 bee swarms across the ACT and surrounding Capital region over the past 5 weeks.
He’s currently caring for 63 hives across locations including Monash and Little Burra in nearby NSW.
Dave credits recent good rain, warmer than average soils (+5C) and a very understanding wife and neighbours for making his endeavour a success.
Dave and Ellie Croft joined ABC Radio Canberra’s Adrienne Francis in the studio to discuss the booming backyard operation.
Dave Croft can be contacted for swarm relocation: 0407 455 033
If a bee swarm on government land is causing concern, call Access Canberra on 13 22 81.
If the swarm is on private property call a Swarm Collector. A list is available on the ACT Beekeepers Association website.
